Preplanning Checklist
Preplanning Checklist
Planning your funeral in advance is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give your family. When your wishes are known, your loved ones can spend less time making decisions and more time remembering and supporting one another in their grief. This checklist can help you get started.
Choose the Type of Service You Want
Preplanning gives you the opportunity to create a service that truly reflects your life. It also offers your family comfort, knowing they are honoring your wishes exactly as you intended. As you plan, consider the following:
- Select the funeral home and funeral director you would like to care for your service.
- Decide what type of service you would like, such as a traditional funeral or cremation.
- If you prefer burial, choose where you would like to be laid to rest.
- Meet with your funeral director to review casket and urn options.
- If you choose burial, select the clothing you think most appropriate.
- Choose a location for your service, such as the funeral home, a place of worship, a meaningful location, or graveside.
- Decide whether you would like flowers, memorial donations to a favorite charity, or both.
- Choose who you would like to take part in your service, including pallbearers, an officiant, and anyone you would like to speak or participate. Consider asking them personally.
- Select music or songs that are meaningful to you.
- Write your obituary, or make notes about what you would like it to include
Choose Who You Want to be in Charge
Your family and friends will want to honor your final wishes. A little preparation now helps them know exactly how. Consider taking these steps:
- Make sure someone you trust, ideally your executor, has a copy of your will.
- Share a list of important accounts with a family member or trusted friend, along with the details of your final wishes.
- Choose someone to serve as your power of attorney.
- Ask someone to be ready to cancel utilities and subscriptions when the time comes.
Choose to Pay in Advance
Planning ahead can also offer financial peace of mind for you and your family. Paying for your arrangements in advance allows your loved ones to focus on what matters most. When possible, consider prepaying for:
- Cemetery services and burial plot
- Funeral arrangements, including casket or urn, flowers, transportation, and any specialized services
