Obituary

William Hibler White, age 87, of Chattanooga, TN passed away at home surrounded by his family on 11/30/2011 to be reconciled to our Lord and Savior. Bill was born in Wisner, NE on May 20, 1924 to Harry Raymond White and Mary Rebecca Hibler White. He spent much of his early life in Glenside, PA, New York City and Springfield, MO. His parents, as well as his siblings, Robert Raymond White and Rebecca White Gerlach, preceded him in death. Bill was a 1949 graduate of Penn State University where he earned a BS degree in Dairy Husbandry. In 1955 he completed a MS degree in Agricultural Extension at the University of Missouri. He served as the County Agricultural Extension Agent for Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania from 1955 until his retirement in 1982. The first county 4-H Club programs were instituted by Bill in Philadelphia. Bill served our country proudly as a Marine in WWII in the Pacific Theatre and was passionate about the freedoms he fought to protect. His love for his country and for the Marines was exemplified in his daily life, as he lived out the Marine motto, Semper Fidelis - Always Faithful. His passion and faithfulness for his country were only surpassed by his passion and faithfulness for our Lord. He was an active member of the Young at Heart class at the East Ridge Church of Christ, where he worshipped with so many he loved. His faithfulness to God was expressed most beautifully by his devotion to his sweet wife, Thelma Lee. Bill and Thelma (Grandpa and Nana) were sweethearts, brought together on a blind date through God's providence and held together by unending love and dedication. They were married 65 years and set the standard for Godly marriages. Mr. White is survived by his wife, Thelma Lee, and his children Bob (Charlotte) White of Harrison, TN and Mary (David) Lasley of Bentonville, AR. He was a proud Grandpa to 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Grandchildren include: Jennifer (Will) Brewer of Ooltewah, TN; Bradley (Ashley) White of Knoxville, TN; Denise Snider of Memphis, TN; Michelle Snider of Memphis, TN; Amber (Jason) Robertson of Ooltewah, TN; Amanda (Matt) Neely of Dayton, OH; Jason (Lauren) White of Nashville, TN. He often joked and teased the great-grandchildren and they knew him as "George". Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 11:00AM at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, MO with Dennis Smith officiating, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Sunday, December 18 at 2:00 PM at the East Ridge Church of Christ with Charles Cochran and Doug McVey officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the East Ridge Church of Christ Young at Heart Class, Martin Boyd Christian Home, or Boyd-Buchanan School.
