Obituary

William McDonald "Bill" Tynes, 60, Springfield, passed away on September 22, 2010, off the coast of Santorini, Greece, after suffering a heart attack. Bill was born March 8, 1950, in Dallas, Texas, the son of Walker Aubrey and Suzanne McDonald Tynes. He moved with his parents and sister, Katy, to Springfield in 1954. Bill was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, serving as an acolyte during his teen years. He enjoyed scouting as a child and served as Scout Master of his son's troop for several years. He was involved in athletics throughout his school years at Hickory Hills and Glendale High School, graduating with the class of 1968. He was one of three generations in his family to attend the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and graduated in 1972, as a Gownsman with a degree in Economics. Upon graduation he was first employed at the Wm F Crome subsidiary of Springfield Grocer Company in Clinton, Missouri, starting his career as a driver and warehouse order selector. He moved back to Springfield in 1973, to begin work in purchasing and sales for Springfield Grocer Company. In 1975, he ushered in the modern age of technology for Springfield Grocer Company as the first IT Director. He led the company as General Manager, Vice-President, and President leading to his current role as Chairman/CEO of the company. He also served on industry boards with the Missouri Restaurant Association, UniPro Foodservice, and locally the Ozarks Food Harvest. Bill was the third generation of his family's leadership at Springfield Grocer Company, which will celebrate its 145th year in business this year. He always strived for excellence and genuinely cared about and appreciated each and every person associated with Springfield Grocer Company. The tradition and heritage of Springfield Grocer Company was always a source of great pride to him. Bill was married to Pamela Temple in 1970, and he arranged for them to renew their vows in 1990 as a 20th anniversary surprise. Over their nearly 40 years of marriage they raised two children, Jeff and Sarah, who gave him great joy and pride. Bill most enjoyed life when he was with his family and friends. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. Family cookouts, holidays, vacationing with family, or just hunting for crawdads with Walker and Elizabeth in the Pierson Creek brought him great delight. He was an avid reader, interested in a lifetime of learning. He enjoyed fly fishing, fly tying, hunting with his bird dog "Tully," traveling, and riding motorcycles. He loved being on the water and spent many a fulfilling day searching for an elusive catch at the end of a fly rod. He exemplified the best in human nature and was always willing to lend a hand or an ear to anyone that needed him. His years of involvement in the community personally, with his family, and his company reflected his humble desire to leave things better than he found them. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all those he touched. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Walker Aubrey Tynes; mother, Suzanne McDonald Tynes; infant sister, Anne Morrow Tynes; and paternal aunt, Marion E. Ashford. Bill is survived by his wife, Pam Temple Tynes; a son and his wife, Jefferson McDonald and Lynn E. Tynes, all of Springfield; a daughter, Sarah Morrow Tynes, Grants Pass, Oregon; a sister, Katherine Morrow Tynes and her partner, Stan Haseltine, Springfield; two grandchildren, Walker Aubrey Tynes II and Elizabeth Morrow Tynes, of the home in Springfield; and the Gregory L.
