Obituary

The Reverend Doctor William "Bill" G. Stype Jr., 79, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2009, after an illness. Bill was born in Coraopolis, Pa., on May 29, 1930, to William G. Stype and Nellie Patton Stype. He received his Bachelor's degree from Thiel College a Master of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1984, from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. Bill married his sweetheart, Lynne Carol Stoner, in June of 1961. Over the course of his 30 year ministry, Bill served as long time pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church and as Interim or Guest Pastor at several churches in Kansas and Missouri. One of Bill's strengths was to inspire service by example. He's been an activist for social justice all of his life, he volunteered at an orphanage while serving the Army in Korea, he spent a summer working for voters' rights in Mississippi in 1964, he led numerous youth mission trips to a Navajo Reservation, and with his churches, sponsored ten refugee families from various parts of the world to resettle in the United States. As a result of his service and teaching, he inspired many, many others to live a life of service. In his free time he loved to travel the world with Lynne and enjoyed several family trips to camp at the lake and across the county. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Lynne. He is survived by their children, Jay (Susan) Stype of Longmont, Colo., Angela Wilson of Moberly, Mo., and Martha (Marty) Arvizu of Kansas City, Mo.; as well as nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at 7 p.m., in Southminster Presbyterian Church. Time for coffee and to visit with the family will follow the service. In lieu of flowers please make charitable gifts to Southminster Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Children's Services, or to the Ghost Ranch Conference Center.
