Obituary

William Joseph Bill' Burton was born on August 26, 1926 in Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Gladys and Glen Burton. Bill grew up in a close-knit family in Tama, Iowa that included three sisters Elizabeth, Ruby, Pearl. As a young man of 17 years of age, Bill stepped up to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. He proudly served America not once but twice. From 1943 -1946 during World War II, Bill served in the Pacific theater on several ships including the USS Dutton - a survey ship responsible for setting up the markers defining the landing lanes for the US Marines during the famous, critical, and dangerous Okinawa beach assault. Five years later, from 1951 - 1953, Bill answered the call at Guantanamo Bay during the Korean War crisis. Evidenced by the personal sacrifices required to serve in not one, but two wars, and as lifetime member of the VFW and a 63-year member of the American Legion - Bill Burton was a true patriot. Between two tours of duty, Bill made the most important and best, decision of his life. He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ann Guy on July 24, 1950. Their 62-year marriage produced five beautiful daughters, 10 wonderful grandchildren, and seven incredible great-grand children. Bill is survived by his wife Pat, Daughters and Sons In Law: Becky and Vaughn Zimmerman Kathy Rieken Jackie and Mark Wells Susie and James Moore Terri and Stuart Chapman Grandchildren: Justin and Leah Zimmerman Matt and Anita Zimmerman Erika Rieken Jenny Rieken Cory Candler Tyler and Laura Moore Samantha Moore Shannon and Doug Johnston Carly Chapman Great grandchildren: Joey Candler Alexis Ray Taylor & Jacob Zimmerman Sloan and Brody Zimmerman Logan Johnston Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and grandson Cary Candler. Bill was a professional over the road' truck driver. He covered all 48 intercontinental states during his 40-year career. He was known, respected and appreciated by his fellow drivers as a dedicated, courteous, dependable and most important, a safe driver - who always put his company, customers and most importantly, other vehicles and drivers, ahead of himself. Bill's passions and hobbies included flying - he was an accomplished pilot with Civil Air patrol, hauling in walleye and any other fish that dare come within striking distance of his fishing pole, and spending as much time with his best friend, lover and wife and their family. Bill's grand children and great grand children were especially important to him - you best not cross any of them in Bill's presence or he'd let you know. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Omega Health Care Hospice for their compassion, support and assistance during Bill's final days. Our husband, dad, grandpa, and friend will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
