Obituary

Wayne Oscar Immekus, 96, passed away June 12, 2014 at the Veteran's Home in Mt. Vernon, MO. He was born in Sullivan, MO August 27, 1917. Wayne was married to Ruth Winona Immekus November 13, 1942, and they resided at the family home which Wayne helped build in Des Pere, MO for more than 60 years, until 2003 when they moved to Springfield, MO to be closer to family. Ruth preceded him in death in February 2011. He is survived by two children, Bruce Immekus and his wife, Marla, Springfield, MO and Kurt Immekus and his wife, Janet, Howell, MI; four grandchildren, Laura Bays, Fayetteville, AR, Philip Immekus, Brooklyn, NY, Sarah Immekus, Howell, MI and Katie Norton, Battle Creek, MI. Wayne worked for Manhattan Coffee Company and Nestle for many years in the St. Louis area. He served in the United States Army from 1941-1944. He was a prisoner of war in Poland until the war in Europe ended in 1944. He and 3 of his buddies then walked through Europe for 79 days, taking shelter in barns and wherever they could find safe haven. They were then picked up by American troops and sent to France, and back to the United States. Wayne was an avid golfer and gardener. He attended First Church of Christ Scientist in Kirkwood, MO. He loved his children, grandchildren and his wife, Ruth, who he dearly missed in the later years of his life. A graveside service will be Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.gormanscharpf.com.
