June 11, 1935 – December 11, 2016
Waymon Lee Lewellen, beloved husband, parent, grandparent, and sportsman died at the age of 81 on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Cox Medical Center, Springfield, Missouri after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lucy Lewellen of McCrory, Arkansas, and a sister, Lula Mae Taylor of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He retired as a salesman from the Balfour Company after 25 years.
Born and raised in McCrory, Arkansas, he graduated College of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Arkansas, where he played varsity football and basketball. In 1964 he joined the coaching staff at Rogers Arkansas High School as head track coach and offensive line football coach. During his career with the Mountaineers, the team won five conference championships from 1964, when they were undefeated, to 1971. In 2005 his former team members honored him by inducting him into the Rogers Mountaineer Hall of Fame. Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and fishermen.
Waymon was best known and respected for his loyalty and devotion to family and to the host of friends he made and kept over his lifetime. He shared his generosity and sense of humor with many, from college fellows, business and community colleagues, to his extended family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda (Guinn) Lewellen, sons Wade Lee and Eric Guinn Lewellen, daughter-in-law Amy, three grandsons, Simon James, Wyatt Lee, and Samuel Michael Lewellen, and three nieces, Patricia Reed, Camille MacDonald, and Edith Fender.
A celebration of his life will be held on December 15, 2016 in South Haven Baptist Church, 2352 S. Campbell Avenue, Springfield, MO where he was a member. Visitation will begin in the sanctuary from 10 to 11 o'clock with the service to follow. Arrangements are under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to South Haven Building Fund or the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
