April 8, 1926 – July 17, 2024
Waneta Eilleen (Davis) Matthews, 98, Springfield, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024 in Spring Ridge Assisted Living. She was the oldest of four children born to Webb and Mary Ann Davis on April 8, 1926 in Pollock, MO. She moved to Springfield, MO after graduating high school.
Waneta met Bill Matthews and they were married in a double ceremony with brother Jack and Jean Matthews on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 28, 1946.
Bill and his brothers had the Matthews Brothers Quartet which sang over KWTO radio in the late 40's. Then Bill and his brother Monty formed the Jordanaires quartet, moved to Nashville and sang in the Grand Old Opry for 4 years. Then it was back to Springfield forming the Foggy River Boys quartet singing with Red Foley on the Ozark Jubilee.
Bill and Waneta had 3 children: Richard, Julie and Gary.
Waneta retired from Cox Medical Center in 1989. In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and volunteer activities at church, 11 years with Campbell Supper Club, Crosslines and making apple pies. In 2018 she received the Dorsey Levell Lifetime Achievement Award for her many years with Crosslines.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, baby brother Jackie and sister Colleen, grandson Scott Matthews in 1998, husband Bill in 2003, son Richard in 2010 and daughter Julie (Kays) in 2012.
She is survived by sister Ruth Rauch, son Gary (Wendy), grandson Colin, granddaughter Carly (Akins) and her kids Carter, Eli and Henry, step-grandsons Ryan and Jaron Lake, grandson Geoff Kays (Lisa), grandson Justin Kays (Jasmine) and their kids Jack, Julian and Jocelyn.
A gathering will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2024 in South Street Christian Church. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in Eastlawn Cemetery, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers you will consider a donation to Crosslines or Outreach Meals, c/o South Street Christian Church.
