Obituary

Walter "Walt" Matthew Martin, Sr., 79, of Springfield passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010, at 9:05 p.m., in Mercy Villa. He was born December 5, 1930, in Springfield, Illinois, to the late Leo Thomas and Sarah Dolan Martin. He graduated from Rockhurst College in 1953 with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Relations. Walt moved to the Springfield area in 1971. He worked in the truck line broker operations, big rig truck sales and as a salesman for Montgomery Wards Tire Department Store. He was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church; he was active as an Acolyte Leader and volunteered at the Next To New shop. He also was a member of Friends of the Zoo and volunteered for the Republican Party. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death on December 21, 2005 by his wife of 34 years, Mildred "Mid" Anchell Martin, whom he married on August 20, 1971. He is survived by three sons, Walter Matthew "Matt" Martin, Jr. and wife, Susie of Charleston, S.C., and Thomas Martin and wife, Shelby, of Hanoi, Vietnam, and Scott Anchell and wife, Kimberly, of Fairfax Station, Va.; two daughters, Deborah Hiob and husband Doug of Bel Air, Md., and Kit Fulton and husband George, of New Church, Va.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Martin, Alex and Jennifer Anchell, Eric and Caitlin Hiob, and Sarah and Rachel Fulton; two brothers, Thomas Dolan, of Atascadero, Calif., and Paul Leo, of Overland Park, Kan.; and a sister, Musa Pyle, of Kansas City, Mo. Memorial Eucharist will be Saturday, October 23, 2010, at 1 p.m., in Christ Episcopal Church, with the Very Reverend Jonathan Frazier officiating, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Inurnment will be in the Christ Church Columbarium. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mercy Villa Care Fund, 1100 E. Montclair, Springfield, Missouri 65807, or the charity of the donor's choice.
