Obituary

Walter N. George Jr. died April 5, 2014 at Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Springfield, Missouri on March 4, 1924 to Walter N. and Anne C. George, and lived and worked most of his life in Springfield, attending Greenwood and graduating from Springfield Senior High. He joined the Navy during his freshman year in college at Missouri School of Mines, serving in the Pacific during World War II, retiring after 22 years of both active and reserve service. He finished college at the University of Missouri, Columbia and worked in finance, first in Denver, Colorado, where he met his wife of 58 years, Margaret (Peggy) Bartels, and then in Springfield, retiring after 37 years. Walter was preceded in death by his wife Peggy and his parents. He is survived by his three daughters, Margaret (Meg) of Los Angeles, CA, Anne Griffin of Springfield, and Martha of Midland, Texas. He is survived by his twin brother Joseph (Joe), sister and brother-in-law Anne and Hank Billings, of Springfield, and his sister-in-law Barbara Queary of San Rafael, CA. He earned the love, respect and admiration of his four grandchildren, Maggie Piasecki of Nashville, Illinois, and Will, Tim and Aidan Griffin of Springfield. He is also survived by his son-in-law Brian Piasecki, two great-grandchildren, Witten and Morrison Piasecki, and numerous neices, nephews, and their families. Walter was a gentleman, kind, and well-respected. He shared by example with his family and anyone else who knew him what it is to be honorable and fair. He shared his wisdom quietly and with humor. He was loved and will be greatly missed. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8 at Christ Episcopal Church where Walter was a member since infancy. Burial will follow at Hazelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local Humane Society or the Morris Animal Foundation. Arrangements are under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
