Obituary

Walter Denton Cook, 93, Springfield, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010 in St. John's Hospital after a short illness. Denton was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 20, 1916, the son of Walter William and Fannie Mae Eastman Cook. After completion of high school, his family moved to Springfield where he lived for the rest of his life. He was married to Wilma Ruth Edwards on August 15, 1937. Two children were born to this union. Wilma and Denton celebrated 71 years of marriage before Wilma passed away in 2008. He was a veteran who proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Denton worked in the lumber business as a purchasing agent. He became a Christian at a young age and loved his Lord. In 1951 when National Avenue Christian Church formed, he was a founding member when services were held in Phelps School and worked hard to help build the current structure on National Avenue. He served the church in many capacities holding the title of honorary lifetime deacon. Denton was an avid golfer working as a caddie in his youth. When Twin Oaks Country Club was formed, he was in the group that designed the course and built the club house. His competitive nature made him an excellent bridge player and he enjoyed board games with his family. His is survived by a sister, Virginia Lawrenz, Aitkin, Minnesota; his daughter, Judith (Judy) and her husband, Shelby Bradley, Fair Grove; his son, Jerry Denton Cook, Cypress, Texas; two grandsons, Douglas Alan Cook, Houston, Texas; and Darren Michael Cook, San Antonio, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 in National Avenue Christian Church under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Burial will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery. Friends may call between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Friday in the church. Memorials in Denton Cook's name may be made to National Avenue Christian Church.
