Virginia Louise Young, 91, of Springfield, Mo., passed away Sunday, November 15, 2009 in The Christian Health Care Center East. Virginia was born to her parents Harley Henry and Martha Louise Roberts, raised in Springfield and attended Rountree Elementary School and graduated from Central H.S. in 1936. She married her high school sweetheart, Volen Thomas Young, and they were relocated to St. Louis with the Frisco Railroad in 1941, where they raised two children. After losing her husband to a sudden heart attack at age 44, she went to work for The JCPenney Company until she retired and moved back to Springfield in 1995. She was a Christian and lived her life by the golden rule, was a member of the St. Johns Evangelical Church in her youth, and later joined the Lindenwood Baptist Church in St. Louis. She was a loving, caring person, always giving her family the highest priority over self. She loved family gatherings and was a proficient seamstress. You could always count on her famous homemade cookies every Christmas, and if you were lucky, a fresh baked cherry or almond stollen. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Volen Thomas Young; daughter, Linda Louise Holtsclaw; brother, Harvey Lloyd Roberts; and sister, Ruth Eloise Hungerford. She is survived by her son, Volen Thomas (Tom) Young Jr.; brother, James Allen Roberts; daughter-in-law, Sheila Young; and son-in-law, Bill Holtsclaw; grandchildren, Greg, Mitchell and Teneile Holtsclaw, Lisa Payne, Tara Lewis, Bryan Young; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday November 20, 2009 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Funeral Home and services will be held in the chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery.
