Obituary

Our Matriarch. Our Queen. Our Favorite. Verna Curtis, 92, born in St. Louis and long-time resident of Springfield, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, March 8, 2012. Her children say she lived a long and happy life, but more importantly she lived her life her way. She lived that way until her vary last days; only a few days before taking a road trip to visit family in Dallas and play the penny slots at a local casino. She dedicated much of her time and energy to her family. Every Sunday included a family dinner filled with lively conversations, card games and wonderful food. She always listened when needed and was never shy to let you know her opinion. She enjoyed watching 60 minutes, that always stirred the conversation at the dinner table. She also enjoyed traveling and reading. She was a member of King's Way United Methodist Church. A majority of her working life was spent at Ridewell Corporation as secretary to the founder, John E. Raidel. She was the owner of Quarry Creek Antiques for many years. Mrs. Curtis is survived by her children, Rick, Gary and Cathy who is married to Dave Brown; grandchildren, Clay, Regina, Shawn and wife Qing Qing and Chris; her great-grandson Alistair and her puppy, Miller; as well as her sisters Betty Kloess and Carol Willis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Curtis, her sisters, Doris and Bernice and her brother, Charles. Visitation is planned for Sunday from 5 to 7 PM in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel with funeral services on Monday, March 12, 2012 in the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38116.
