Vena Ella
Berglund
August 27, 1925 – April 23, 2021
Vena Ella Custer Berglund was born August 27, 1925 in Crane, Missouri to Obanion and Mary Etta Custer and went peacefully to her heavenly home on April 23, 2021 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She was 4 months shy of her 96th birthday.
Vena was the 7 th child born of 10. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of sixty-seven years, Karl Edward Berglund, two sisters, Ethel Custer Wells and Esther Custer Fee, and five brothers, Owen, Carl, Lewis, Glen, and Noel Custer.
Vena was the valedictorian of her graduating class and played on her high school basketball team. Vena joined the Cadet Core during World War II and worked at the government Rationing office. She attended nursing school in Springfield, Missouri. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, making floral arrangements, square dancing, golf, and playing cards and domino games. Most of all she cherished her family.
On October 25, 1946, Vena married the love of her life, Karl Berglund, in Pittsburg, Kansas. She and Karl had 3 children: Pamela Sue Berglund Dudley, Karl David Berglund, and Glenda Nadine Berglund Buttrey. Being a wife and mother were always her proudest accomplishments. She helped her husband, Karl, develop a successful, small town shoe business in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. Vena volunteered in her church and community, and ministered to many in need. She was able to love well because she loved Jesus and strived to put God first.
Vena is survived by her Daughter, Pam Dudley, of Fraser, CO; Son, David Berglund, of San Miguel, Mexico; Daughter, Glenda Buttrey and husband, Michael of Broken Arrow, OK; Five grandchildren, Scott Dudley and wife, Suzanne, of Columbia, MO, Michael Dudley, and wife Kristin of Elmhurst, IL, Jeff Dudley and wife Sarah, of Bellingham, WA, Brandon Powell and wife Carla, of Smithville, MO, Amanda Torres, and husband Steven, of Broken Arrow, OK; Her sister, Mary Lou Mundkowsky of Frisco, TX; Brother Don Custer, and wife Pat of Springfield, MO; Sister-in-law, Wanda Custer of Aurora, MO; and twelve great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2021 in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home with visitation from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
