Thomas Charles "Tom" Wehner, 94, Springfield, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 in Mercy Hospital in Springfield, after a brief illness.
Thomas was born at the family home on February 20, 1930 in Shrewsbury, Missouri to Francis I. Wehner and Mary Louise Rieger Wehner. Tom was one of 13 children.
Tom was inducted into the Second U.S. Infantry Division and served in Korea. He attended business college in St. Louis, where he met Beverly J. Wortman. On October 25, 1958, Tom married Bev at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Shrewsbury, MO. The couple had two children, Debra S. Wehner and Daniel C. Wehner.
Tom was employed by St. Louis San Francisco Railroad Company, where he was first employed as a stenographer and then promoted to Tax Agent, then Tax Agent in Charge in the Oklahoma City office. He later relocated to Springfield, Missouri and became Tax Commissioner. Upon his retirement, he became a manufacturers representative, selling balloons to the floral industry.
Tom was a server for daily Mass at the Carmelite Monastery in Springfield, until it closed in 2008.
Tom always was the life of the party, socializing with family and friends. "Tom's Specialty" recipes were often requested for those occasions. Tom loved to travel and enjoyed many trips throughout the U.S. and Italy, especially his yearly trips to the beaches in Destin, Florida.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his son, Daniel; siblings, Eleanor, Eugene, Martha, Raymond, Lambert, Mary Lou, Francis, Teresa, Leonard, Margaret and Roberta.
Tom is survived by his wife, Bev; daughter, Debra; brother, Robert; grandchildren, Rylie C. and Talia G. Wehner; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2024 in Immaculate Conception Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors will follow in Rivermonte Memorial Gardens.
