Obituary

Thomas James Kenny, 84, Springfield, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2024 in his home.  He was born December 5, 1939 in Carbondale, PA, the son of John Thomas and Margaret Mary Kenny.

Tom always shared memories of getting into mischief, jumping on trains, and learning about life while growing up in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. In 1959, he joined the Navy, and he spent over a decade of his life on three separate submarines, an experience he never forgot, and never hesitated to share.

He married the love of his life, Kathleen O'Sullivan in 1968. They were wed in Pascagoula, Mississippi and remained married for 55 years, which he always grinned about. Tom was a devoted father to Erin, Bob, and Michael. He worked in nuclear power, first for Virginia Electric and Power and later for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

After retiring, Tom and Kate moved to Tellico Village in Tennessee, where he made many poker buddies. In September of 2023, they moved to Springfield, Missouri to be close to daughter, Erin and granddaughter (and Costco wingman), Kiera. No matter the place Tom went, he explored the world without meeting any strangers—he always left a lasting impression and a smile on the faces of everyone he spoke to with his friendliness and wit. Though he will be sorely missed, Tom's passion is one that can never die, and, as he always said, he was proud of all the things he had done, and all the wonderful things he had experienced.

Memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2024 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
