Obituary

Thomas Ray Hoerschgen, 80, Springfield, passed away Friday, October 31, 2025 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Tom was born on May 5, 1945, in Jefferson City, Missouri, the second of six children born to Mary Ellen Vogel Hoerschgen and Wilfred Hoerschgen and was raised in Bonnots Mill, Missouri. He attended Fatima High School in Westphalia, Missouri where he met the love of his life on a band trip. Tom married his sweetheart, Joan Walburga Verslues, on August 7, 1965. He graduated from Lincoln University and worked in the grocery business for over 35 years, which brought him and his young family to Springfield, Missouri in 1978.

While living in Springfield, he spent his time serving his community as a member of various Sertoma Clubs that supported the Boys and Girls Clubs and the Ronald McDonald Tooth Truck. He loved gardening, fishing, the Kansas City Chiefs, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Thomas was preceded in death by parents Mary Ellen and Wilfred Hoerschgen and his brother-in-law Kenneth Bailey.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan W. Hoerschgen, daughter Jackie Muenks (Rick), son Eric Hoerschgen, daughter Kathy Markley (Allan), son Ethan Hoerschgen (Michelle), grandsons Jack Muenks, Joe Muenks, Jimmy Hoerschgen, Seth Markley, Luke Markley, Joshua Markley, Christian Hoerschgen, and granddaughters Nicole Koenke (Paul), Erica Hoerschgen, Anna Hoerschgen, Grace Hoerschgen Isabella Hoerschgen and 3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister, Diana Bailey, brother Jim Hoerschgen (Yvonne), brother John Hoerschgen, sister Cindy Kever (John), and brother Paul Hoerschgen along with many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 14, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1115 North Campbell Ave, Springfield. A funeral mass will be held following visitation at 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Thomas' memory. Private burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
