IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Theodore Roosevelt
Higgs, Jr.
June 7, 1927 – February 19, 2021
Theodore Roosevelt Higgs, Jr., known as Teddy by those who loved him, passed peacefully on February 19th, 2021 in Springfield, MO after a short illness. Teddy was born in Springfield on June 7, 1927 to Theodore, Sr. and Audry Higgs. He was the younger brother of Duane, and the older brother of Patricia, Darrel and Ferba. His parents and brothers preceded him in death.
Teddy grew up in Gibson Chapel Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1945, he attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO. He left Lincoln to serve in the US Army where he completed Army Bandsman Training at the US Naval School of Music and played trombone in the Army Band. While serving, Teddy earned the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal before being honorably discharged in 1956.
After separating from the US Armed Forces, Teddy continued his long career of service, working for the Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Navy, both in Washington, DC.
Following his retirement, Teddy returned to Springfield in 1989. He gave back to the community he loved through his volunteer service on the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, the City Utilities Citizens' Advisory Council and the Midtown Neighborhood Association.
Teddy's 93-years were marked by an unwavering love for his family. He found joy in the simple pleasures of his life including sitting on his front porch, driving his 31-year old 5-speed classic car until 3-months before his death, and a great affection for Scotch Malt Whisky.
Teddy is survived by his sisters, Patricia Duncan and Ferba Lofton and a host of family and friends.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to all those who have offered support at this time.
