Obituary

On the evening of September 22, 2025, surrounded by the family he so dearly loved, Stephen "Steve" Hughes peacefully passed into eternity.

Steve was a man who truly lived with joy. He loved Jesus with all his heart, and that love poured out in the way he cared for his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandson, and countless friends. Family was not just important to Steve — it was his life. Nothing thrilled him more than a set of bleachers at a ballgame, cheering from the sidelines, or showing up for every school activity and celebration. He was always there — smiling, encouraging, and proud beyond words.

Steve enjoyed a lifelong career in finance, spending the final 20 years of his career at the Bank of Kimberling City before retiring in 2012. His work was never just about numbers. He used his role to help people flourish, to strengthen his community, and to build relationships that lasted long after the workday ended. Earlier in life, Steve also proudly served his country in the National Guard.

Faith was the heartbeat of Steve's life. A member of Aldersgate Church in Nixa, he poured himself into ministry, especially through the Walk to Emmaus retreats. There, he shared the Gospel with honesty and humility, offering his personal testimony to hundreds of men and pointing them to the hope of Christ. Steve lived his faith not just in words but in actions — in kindness, generosity, and a quiet determination to serve others.

And then, there was the lake. The lake was Steve's happy place. Whether fishing, boating, or simply enjoying the peace of the water, he loved the simple joys of life and delighted in sharing them with family and friends. He also had another lifelong passion — cheering for his beloved Kansas Jayhawks. When it came to KU basketball, there was no bigger fan. "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!" was often heard when his team took the court.

Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Cindy, who was his steadfast partner in every season of life. He was a proud and loving father to Kim Good (Brent), Scott Hughes (Heather), and Molly Hale (Rick). His legacy continues through his seven beloved grandchildren — Emily, Madison, Carter, Katelyn, Hawk, Anabel, and Mavrik — and his great-grandson Benton, affectionately called "Bubba." Steve is also survived by his brother Dave, two sisters-in-law, Patti and Becky, and many nieces and nephews.

Steve's life was one of faith, family, and service. He gave generously, loved deeply, and lived fully. Though his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, his laughter, his steady presence, and the legacy of his love for Jesus and his family will ripple through the generations that follow.
