Born June 9, 1925 Died January 25, 2015 Parents: H. A. & Ola May (Fugitt) Smith Birthplace/Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky Stan married Suzanne Stone in Kaufman, Texas on May 31, 1950. Stan & Suzanne honeymooned in Shreveport, Louisiana. They resided in Dallas, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Southern Methodist University. After graduation Stan went to work for General Motors and subsequently Oldsmobile where he was a District Manager until his retirement. During his career with Oldsmobile Stan and Suzanne moved several times before finally settling in Springfield, Missouri in 1969. Suzanne preceded Stan in death in 1997. Survivors include two sons, Duke Alan Smith (Joyce) and Thomas Lee Smith (Joyce); one daughter, Lauren Jeannine Sandifer (Michael); grandchildren Emily Anderson, Marti Hill, Lucy Yeary, Thomas Sandifer and Maizie Suzanne Hymbaugh. They also have eight great grandchildren. Stan Smith volunteered for military service during WWII and served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. During WWII S/Sgt. Smith was stationed in Deopham Green, England where he served with the 452nd Bomber Group. Stan was a radio operator/machine gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. From his military service Stan was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern (EAME) Ribbon with two bronze stars, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Air Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal and a Wings Aerial Badge. Stan loved airplanes. He had his pilot's license and flew regularly until he was 70. Being from Kentucky Stan also enjoyed good bourbon. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri. A private memorial service will be held by his family on Friday, January 30, 2015. The family suggests in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Missouri Veterans Home, Attn: Ms. Susan Paden, #1 Veterans Drive Mexico, Missouri 65265.
