Floyd Harold Hardin, Sr., affectionately known as "Sonny", departed this life January 6, 2012, at the age of 82. He was the youngest of seven children born to William H. Hardin, Sr. and Charlotte Agnes (Givehand) Hardin on September 15, 1929, in West Plains, MO. At an early age, Sonny moved to Springfield with his family where he attended Lincoln School graduating in 1947. Only five months ago, Sonny suffered the loss of his wife, Margaret Ann (Ellis) Hardin, whom had been his companion for over 63 years. Together they shared four children: Floyd Harold Hardin, Jr., Mary Margaret Hardin-Phillips, Kimberly Ann Hardin-Jones and Charlotte Celeste Hardin. Although Sonny retired from Kraft Foods in 1991 after 29 years of service, he is widely known for his catering and bartending expertise. Always the life of the party, Sonny never met a stranger and could always be counted on for a good story, a hearty laugh and a special smile. His gentle manner, strong work ethic and giving spirit made him a role model for not only his own children, but those of friends and family as well. Sonny was a member of Pitts Chapel United Methodist Church for over 60 years and remained active on various boards and committees until his death. He also served on the Springfield Park Board for several years. A sports enthusiast, Sonny could often be found in the stands of the local arenas supporting both family members and friends. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents: Willie and Charlotte Hardin; wife: Margaret Ann (Ellis) Hardin; six siblings: George Hardin (Dorothy), Donald L. Hardin (Willa Bird), William H. Hardin, Jr. (Jewel), Joe Neal Hardin, Anna Mae Adams and Lilla Agnes Wharton (Wesley); son-in law: Carlos S. Jones; and sister-in-law: Ruby D. Faulkner. He leaves to cherish his memory four children: Floyd Jr. (Karen) of Chandler, AZ, Mary (Clarence), Kimberly and Charlotte all of Springfield; five grandchildren: Leslie, Jeffrey, Floyd III, Ashley and Steven; and five great-grandchildren: Bria, Bradley, DJ, Javien and Jonas. He also leaves many, many, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be held Friday, January 13, 2012, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 E. Seminole. Funeral Service will be Saturday, January 14, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at Pitts Chapel United Methodist Church, 600 N. Benton, Rev. Darren Faulkner officiating.
