Obituary

Silvester Clement Leonard died Wednesday, October 25, 2017.  He was born November 3, 1929 to the late Clement Anthony Leonard and Silvia Ivadel (Schadt) Leonard on a farm south of St. Clair, MN.  He was an only child.  He attended school in Worthington, MN; St. James, MN; and Lawrence, KS; graduating from the University of KS in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering.  He was a member of the Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity.  He began his first job after graduation on June 11, 1951 with the U.S.G.S. in Rolla as a cartographic engineer.  He met his future wife, Evelyn, in Rolla where she was starting her first job with the U.S.G.S., too.  They were married October 13, 1951.  Evelyn passed away July 8, 2010.

Silvester was drafted on November 9, 1951 and, after basic training at Fort Riley, KS, was assigned to the Army Chemical Center at Edgewood, MD.  Evelyn went with him and was employed by the U.S. Army as a statistical clerk.  Upon his discharge in 1953, he went to work for the Phillips Petroleum Company, Rocket fuels Div., Waco, TX.  Upon completion of that assignment, he transferred to company headquarters in Bartlesville, OK as a process engineer.  In 1969, he joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an environmental engineer.  Upon retirement in 1988, he and Evelyn returned to Greenfield, where he was a part-time consultant with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in Springfield until mid-1990.

In addition to being a U.S. Army veteran, he was also a Registered Professional Engineer (OK) for over 33 years and was a charter member of the Ozark Park United Methodist Church in Bartlesville, OK.  He was a trustee of the Greenfield United Methodist Church for many years.  He became a member of the Community Christian Church after moving to Springfield.  He also attended Asbury United Methodist Church.

Silvester is survived by his long-time companion, Elaine, her daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.  Funeral service will be at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 10:00 AM.  Interment will follow at Pennsboro Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Community Christian Church, Asbury United Methodist Church, or the Southwest Missouri Humane Society.
