Obituary

Shirley Obit in her words

Shirley Ann Clothier Maddy, age 91, passed away on January 15, 2017.   She was born in 1925 to Mr. and Mrs. Reverdy Mead Clothier of Silver Creek, New York. After graduation from high school, she attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA for two years before transferring to the Boston School of Occupational Therapy at Tufts University. In 1946, her first job was a psychiatric O.T. at the VA Hospital in Northport, NY, followed by a year of therapy at Camp Kilmer, NJ.

She married William Patton Maddy in 1949 and moved to Waynesboro, PA where the first three of their children were born. After moving to Snyder, NY, the youngest of their four children was born. A move to Aspen and then to Durango gave the whole family a wonderful look at life in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. The move to Springfield in the middle of 1967 brought the Midwest up close. After setting up a geriatric program at Cox North Hospital for three years, Shirley began a pilot program for psychiatric inmates the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners. After this energizing experience, she decided to run for the Second District County Commissioner position, and was elected the first female county commissioner in the history of Greene County.

Returning to a more stable existence, she began consulting in area nursing homes as a therapist, for the next 12 years, until she felt herself to be as old as those she was serving and decided it was time to retire.

She leaves behind her husband, Bill and three children: John Raymond Maddy of Springfield, Carol Lee Maddy of Joplin, Jeffrey Stuart Maddy and wife Nancy, of Cape Coral, FL, and her brother, John Watts Clothier of Chino, CA.

She leaves to the future her beloved 12 grandchildren, Chris Martin and wife Leslie of Carl Junction, MO, Jeremy Martin of Joplin, Andrew Martin and wife, Angie, of Webb City, Jessica and husband, Philip Key of Denver, CO, Courtney Maddy of Portland, OR, Justin and wife, Darcy Wilcox of Hampton, NH, Kelly Maddy of Pueblo, CO, Elizabeth Maddy of Denver CO, Kyle and wife, Kelsi Maddy of Centennial, CO, Kelsey and husband, Richard Frock of Grain Valley, MO, Kameron Maddy of Waynesville, MO, and Katelyn and Nick Hash of Ft. Bragg, NC. Shirley also had 12 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter, Tracey Clothier Maddy Porro.
