IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Selma M.
Hartsell
September 7, 1922 – September 11, 2019
Selma Mabel Hartsell, 97 of Springfield passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Jordan Creek Nursing Home. She was born September 7, 1922 in Ansley, Nebraska to Otto Everett and Mabel (Marshall) Price.
Selma was a member of South Haven Baptist Church.
Selma married John McDaniel who passed away in 1953. With two young daughters, Selma was a strong willed and determined young lady who sacrificed so much to make sure her girls were loved, safe and grew up in a Christian home. She was the first Avon Representative in Springfield and went door to door, business to business selling good smelling fragrances. Her house could be picked out from blocks away due to the boxes and boxes of perfumes, soaps and make-up …in every shade and scent. After the girls left home, she went to work on the line at Lilly Tulip. In retirement she volunteered at Mercy's Gift Shop for 18 years where she was known as "The Balloon Lady", keeping the gift shop stocked with blown up balloons.
Although Selma couldn't carry a tune, she did have great rhythm and loved to dance. Many Saturday nights were spent tiptoeing through the tulips and jitterbugging the night away. She also loved card games, Pinochle and Canasta were just a few, usually fighting over "Big Penny" a game.. She might clean and cook all day just to entertain and play cards all night.
Selma was a sharp dresser. Her hair was never out of place and she always matched head to toe.
She enjoyed traveling, she went all over the USA returning with a spoon from everywhere she visited. She made a hop over the pond traveling to Scotland and England as well. In addition to a spoon, everywhere she traveled, she also bought a postcard instead of taking pictures.
Selma's favorite and most important things in life were God, her grandchildren, St. Louis Cardinals and a good cup of coffee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, David, Otto Jr., Ernest, Glen, Dale and Jerry Price, and a sister, Flossie (Price) Heritage.
Selma is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Manemann and Janice Quigg both of Springfield; four grandchildren, Ann Will and husband, Victor of Kaiserslautern, Germany, Christopher Manemann and wife, Jennifer of Liberty, MO, Jody Mathis and husband, Shawn of Morrison, CO, and April Foshe and husband, Scott of Springfield, MO; six great-grandchildren, Clarisa Will of Las Vegas, NV, Otto Will of Acworth, GA, Elizabeth Manemann of Liberty, MO, Ethan Manemann of Liberty, MO, Nora Renee Mathis of Morrison, CO, and Billy Foshe of Springfield, MO; two uncles, Felix Marshall (A Pearl Harbor survivor) of Monmouth, OR and Peter Marshall (a survivor of WWII POW for 1368 days in Japan) of Prescott Valley, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 1-2:00 pm at Gorman Scharpf Funeral Home with a graveside service following at 2:30 pm in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to Phoenix Hospice, 3033 S. Kansas Expressway, Springfield, Missouri 65807 or Alzheimer's Association, 3645 South Avenue, Springfield, Missouri 65807.
