IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruth E.
Wittmer
September 23, 1922 – November 12, 2022
Ruth Elizabeth (Martin) Wittmer passed away peacefully on November 12, 2022 at the age of 100, surrounded by her sons.
Ruth was born on the equinox, September 23, 1922, in Chicago, IL, to John and Dena Martin. She grew up in Kahoka, MO, and after graduating from junior college, taught in a one room schoolhouse in rural Iowa, where she met and married Samuel C. Wittmer, a medical student. In 1957, Dr. Wittmer completed his surgical training in Temple, TX, and the couple moved to Springfield, MO, to raise their five sons. A lifelong Christian, she imparted these values, along with the importance of education, to her sons, of whom she was most proud. All graduated from college, and received post graduate degrees.
During her lifetime, she was an active volunteer at Burge (later Cox) Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Springfield Little Theater, LIFT, King's Way Methodist Church, and Schweitzer Church, among others. An avid reader and gardener, she also enjoyed travel, craft fairs, sewing, ceramics, refinishing furniture, and decorating eggs. All were welcome in her home, and encouraged to "sit down and have a cup of coffee". She treasured the many close friendships developed throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son Bruce, and dear friend Gil Smith.
Ruth is survived by her sons, Sam (Kathy), Marc (MaryLou), Doug (Gail), and Phil (Janelle); along with nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at The Manor at Elfindale for the exceptional and compassionate care our mother received during her last years.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 1, 2022 in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral home with a lunch to follow at Schweitzer Church, 2747 East Sunshine, Springfield, MO.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Council of Churches of the Ozarks, or charity of choice.
