Obituary

Ruby Cain (Wyrick) was born in 1929 in rural Kansas, east of Wichita. Growing up on a farm during the Great Depression and World War 2, she graduated from Augusta High School in 1947 and soon after moved to Saint Joseph, Missouri, to live with her older sister, Zeritta, and her family. In St. Joe, Ruby found work and a few months later met Loyd Wyrick, the man she would eventually marry in 1949. Loyd worked for AT&T, so after marriage the two traveled for several years according to the demands of Loyd's career. They lived for about one year (1953) in Springfield, Missouri, and agreed that Springfield would be a great place to live after retiring — a dream they finally fulfilled 27 years later. In the meanwhile, Ruby and family lived in Wichita (1955-1965) and Kansas City, Missouri (1966-1980). Retiring in 1980 and moving to Springfield, the couple set up housekeeping in the southeastern corner of the city. There they remained until Ruby's untimely death a few days ago.

Of the many friends Ruby and Loyd made in Springfield over the succeeding 42 years, their most active friendships were with members of the local Telephone Pioneers social club, comprised of retired Bell Telephone employees and their spouses. Other friends and neighbors are too numerous to list, but those friendships were an important part of Ruby's life. Scores of friends and relatives joined her in 2019 to celebrate Ruby's 90th birthday at a party she later said was one of the most exciting experiences of her life. The following year (2020) was her worst by far, when the pandemic caused Ruby to spend far more time at home (alone), and far less time on outings with friends.

Ruby was a long-time member of the Christian Church. She has been a season ticket holder for decades and attended hundreds of MSU Lady Bears (basketball) games. Ruby frequently attended Springfield Cardinals baseball games and watched sports year-round on her large television screen. She was a devoted Michael Jordan fan, and still occasionally watched video highlights of his old games.

Finally, Ruby traveled more than ever after Loyd passed away. Earlier this year, she traveled with her son, Jim, and his family to Alaska. Other trips took her to Europe, China, Russia, Chattanooga Tennessee, and Las Vegas (many times!).

She was preceded in death by Iva Cain (mother), Tom Cain (father), Hilden Cain (brother), Zeritta Travis (sister), Velda Cain (sister), and Donald Cain (brother).

Ruby is survived by Tom Wyrick (son) of Playa del Carmen, MX, Jim Wyrick (son) and his wife Elizabeth of Parkville, MO, Sara Wyrick (granddaughter) and her son Hayden (great-grandson) of Fort Worth, TX, and Matthew Wyrick (grandson) and his wife Jaime of Houston, TX.
