Obituary

Rosemary (Fogo) Fiero was born November 13, 1933 in Jewel County, Kansas. She passed away peacefully on May 21, 2022 in Springfield, Missouri.

Her parents Frank and Lillian Fogo moved the family, to Tillamook, Oregon when Rosemary was two. When her father died in a logging accident six years later, Rosemary's mother moved her family to Esbon, Kansas to be closer to her own mother and other family members. Rosemary loved her time in Oregon and would return for visits several times throughout her life.

Rosemary grew up in humble surroundings in Esbon, which was and is a small farming community not too far from the Nebraska border. She graduated from the local high school in 1951 and moved to Kansas City to attend secretarial school.

After graduating she spent time in Kansas City, back in Esbon, and in Hastings, Nebraska, before marriage to a Navy officer took her to San Diego and then to Reno, Nevada. While living in Reno, Rosemary worked in a casino as a blackjack dealer, where she was occasionally deployed as a "cooler" to distract players enjoying too much luck.

When her first marriage ended, Rosemary returned to Kansas where she met Arles "Red" Fiero. The two married November 14, 1955 and settled in Mankato, Kansas. Two years later the young couple moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado on the theory that the dry climate would be good for Rosemary's allergy induced asthma.

Rosemary thrived in Colorado. She and Red kept horses on a ranch outside of town and were active in the local riding and rodeo scene. Rosemary took up trick riding and even tried her luck as a barrel racer. They also loved to go camping, hunting, and fishing in the mountains.

In 1965 a situation in Red's extended family presented the opportunity for the couple to grow their own family and in May of that year they adopted a son, James Grant Fiero. A 100-year flood the next year convinced them to move from the ranch to higher ground closer to town. They moved to the Black Forest subdivision north of Colorado Springs.

The move closer to town allowed Rosemary to take a job at Litton Industries, where she helped run an early version of a computer.

When James started school Rosemary and Red decided to move again — this time in to Colorado Springs, where James was enrolled in the Divine Redeemer School and Rosemary took an active roll as a volunteer in parish administration.

Though she worked throughout his youth, first at Litton Industries and later as office manager for a local doctor, Rosemary was very active in her son's activities, shuttling him to soccer practices, games, and gymnastics meets. When he wanted to learn to ski, Rosemary endured the cold to drive him to night lessons at the local ski hill and even learned to ski herself so the family could enjoy ski vacations together.

Rosemary was thrilled when James chose to stay in Colorado Springs to attend The Colorado College and the family remained close during those college years. When James later attended law school, Rosemary was proud to tell her friends she had a lawyer in the family.

In 1996 Rosemary and Red retired to Springfield, Missouri so Red could do more fishing and Rosemary would be close to her Sister, Doris. Red passed away suddenly late in 2000, leaving Rosemary on her own for more than 20 years. For most of that time Rosemary enjoyed the companionship of her little dog and new best friend Lilly. The two were inseparable and Lilly brought great joy to Rosemary's later years.

Rosemary took pride in her independence and was able to stay in her house, living on her own until she was nearly 87. A significant illness forced Rosemary to move to a nursing home in early in the pandemic. She never truly recovered. Despite these last two years Rosemary's was, by all accounts, a life well lived.

Rosemary's parents Frank and Lillian Fogo, brother Dale Fogo, and husband Arles Fiero precede her in death. She is survived by sister Doris Rush, brother Don Fogo, son James Fiero, daughter-in-law Anne Fiero, and grandchildren Connor and Robin Fiero.

No memorial services are planned. The family will have a small interment ceremony later in Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the SPCA.
