Rosalie DeLange died on November 13, 2014 as a result of a stroke. She was born January 30, 1921 in New York City to Richard and Mabel Werner, while her father was affiliated with Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Her mother died two years later and Rosalie and her father moved to Indiana. There he met and married Naomi Brickel. Eventually, the family moved to Springfield, Illinois, where Rosalie spent her girlhood. She studied piano, ballet and tap dancing. After hearing a violin recital, she decided to give up dancing and begin violin lessons. The family moved to Jefferson City, MO where Rosalie graduated from high school and attended Jr. College before relocating to Springfield, MO. Music was always a very significant part of her life. For nearly ten years she played the organ at Grant Avenue Baptist Church. She was a violinist with the Springfield Symphony for 64 seasons, where she met her husband, Bill DeLange, also a violinist. Together they raised four children. For more than thirty years, Rosalie taught violin lessons in her home, feeling the most important thing she could teach her students was a love of music. She was an accomplished pianist as well and enjoyed accompanying her own students and others at music festivals. Over the years, she also played violin with the Little Theatre, Springfield Regional Opera, MSU Tent Theatre, Mid-America Singers, visiting artists at Hammons Center and various local churches, including playing in the orchestra at Second Baptist Church for 20 years. After retirement, she and Bill enjoyed traveling to Europe, Jamaica and especially their favorite state, Colorado. During her later years, she loved doing the things most women do: lunches with friends, family get-togethers, reading, needlepoint and knitting, especially for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She even learned to use a computer in her 80's. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, brothers- and sisters-in-law and a nephew. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Mort Shurtz; son, Bill DeLange III; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Beth DeLange, all of Springfield; son and daughter-in-law, Rich and Kay DeLange, Kingwood, TX; five grandsons, Jay Shurtz and wife Rachelle, Erwin, TN; Matt Shurtz and wife Krista, Springfield, MO; Taylor DeLange and wife Kat, Austin, TX; Ryan DeLange and fiancé Kayla Lynch; and Casey DeLange, all of Kingwood, TX; great-grandchildren, Tyrus and Ava Jane Shurtz, Springfield, MO; sister, Meeraine Cannon, Colorado Springs, CO; nieces, nephews and dear friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Because it was such an important part of her life, she requested that any memorial contributions be made to the Springfield Symphony, 411 N. Sherman Pkwy, Springfield, MO 65802. "All that I am or hope to be I owe to my mother." A. Lincoln
