Dr. Ronald Elroy Giedd died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Springfield Missouri on April 29 th 2022 at the age of 86.
Ronald is survived by his wife, Joanne Giedd of Springfield Mo, daughter, Heather Agee and her husband Barry Agee of Springfield Mo, grandchildren Hannah Curnutt and Leeah Gallop of Springfield Mo, Emberlynn Agee of Sparta Mo, Alexis Agee of Richland WA, Cody Curnutt of Springfield Mo and Kayleb Badalian of Colombia Mo.
Ronald is preceded in death by his parents, Rollie and Sadie Giedd of Souix Falls SD and brother, Gary Giedd and his wife Betty Giedd of Mansfield Mo.
Ronald was born on April 25, 1936 in Tripp, South Dakota to Rollie and Sadie Giedd. He graduated from Washington High School in 1954. He then attended and graduated from Augustana College in 1958. He attended Iowa State and obtained his Master's degree in Physics in 1960. He then taught physics at University of North Dakota until 1964. He taught at University of Hartford while attending the University of Connecticut to earn his PhD. He was married to Joanne Hooey on July 8, 1967 and graduated with his PhD in Physics in 1970. Ron and Joanne adopted their daughter Heather in 1971 and lived in Southbury CT for 20 years while raising their daughter. Ronald taught and worked in administration at University of Connecticut for 24 years before retiring in 1991. Ronald, Joanne and Heather moved to Springfield Missouri in 1991 and built a home in Seymour, where Ron and Joanne lived for 18 years before moving to Springfield Mo in 2009.
Ronald's family remembers him as a kind and gentle encourager, who always saw the positive in everything and everyone. He loved spending time with his family and serving his community.
Ronald loved to camp, race cars at Watkins Glen NY, fly his airplane and cruise the Hudson River in his boat in his younger years. While living in Southbury, Ronald was Secretary of the Southbury Charter Commission and Chairman of the Region 15 School Board. He was Assistant Coach of Heather's softball team and enjoyed woodworking. In retirement, Ronald was a member of the Seymour Lion's Club and volunteered at the Seymour Apple Festival every year. He worked with Community Foundation of the Ozarks, started the Greater Seymour Area Foundation and helped start several other community foundations in Missouri. Ronald enjoyed tutoring the MSU Lady Bear basketball players for several years in the 1990s. Ronald was a member of King's Way United Methodist Church in Springfield Mo.
A private service will be held at King's Way United Methodist Church for family members. In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. and Mrs. Ronald E Giedd Fund of the Greater Seymour Area Community Foundation, POB 232, Seymour MO 65746. The family would like to thank CoxHealth at Home Hospice, Home Instead Senior Care and clergy at King's Way for their loving care and support.
