Obituary

Mary Romalee Wilkerson departed this life Sunday, March 20, 2011. She was born on October 18, 1927, to Otto and Ruth Westerman of Clever, Missouri. Romalee graduated from Central High School and later Missouri State University. While attending MSU, she completed her bachelor's degree in education and met Curtis R. Wilkerson. They were married on August 27, 1949. Her first teaching experience was in Billings, Missouri where she taught third and fourth grades for two years. This wonderful experience led to a career in teaching. She later continued her education and graduated from Missouri University with a master's degree. Romalee was a member of Harmony Baptist Church of Rogersville. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Organization and Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority. Romalee joined the Springfield School System in 1949. She taught at Reed Junior High, Cherokee, and finally Glendale High School from which she retired as a high school counselor after thirty-five years in education. Post retirement, she obtained her real estate license and met many more wonderful friends and associates. She also loved spending time around the family farm and providing an immense amount of help and entertainment for her grandchildren. Additionally, Romalee loved to travel and enjoyed many tours with her friends both in the States and abroad. She was also instrumental, as were many others, in helping her husband, Curtis Wilkerson, attain the office of State Representative for south Springfield in the early eighties. After both of their retirements, they traveled across Missouri working on issues they felt important such as the term limits initiative. Preceding her in death were her husband, Curtis R. Wilkerson; her parents; one brother, Carl; and one sister, Jean Boerste. Survivors include her two sons, Scott and Randy; daughter-in-laws, Cindy and Denise; three wonderful grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, and Lindsey; her brother, Gary and sister-in-law Carolyn; brother-in-law, Harvey and his wife, Rena; a sister-in-law, Joan Westerman; and many nieces and nephews also survive her. Funeral services will be held in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel in Springfield on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 2 p.m., followed by burial in White Oak Cemetery in Rogersville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3322 S. Campbell, Suite G, Springfield, Missouri 65807.
