Obituary

Roger Monroe Nickle was born on June 29, 1930 to Erval and Lola Nickle in Butterfield, Missouri. He departed this life on September 18, 2023 at Mercy hospital.

As a child, the family moved to Purdy, Missouri where he spent his days helping on the family farm and attending school. During his high school years he went to Kansas to help with the wheat harvest during the summers.   He attended the Junior college in Monett, Missouri prior to entering the United States Navy where he served from 1951 to 1955. While serving his country he studied and excelled in the electronics field. This provided the educational basis for his 37 ½ year career with IBM. He entered IBM when computers took up an entire room and technicians were trained extensively on the repair of this new technology. He would don his business suit, freshly laundered and pressed white shirt and tie daily and enjoyed his challenging work as his career advanced.

One summer day, Norma Lee Becker attended camp meeting at Log Church in Barry County, Missouri with a relative of his, "Sis" Terry. That meeting started a courtship that resulted in their marriage on July 27, 1956 at the home of a friend in Springfield, Missouri. To this union one child was born, Rogena Lee (Nickle) Brownwood.  He was a wonderful husband and father; she was a wonderful and devoted wife, caring for him every day and in every way. They prayed daily for each member of the family and formed a life of dedication to each other and to their faith. They were warm and engaging conversationalists and cared deeply for friends and family alike. He truly felt that we could all learn something from everyone we met if we were to listen.

Roger Nickle was a man of faith.  He gave his life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at an early age and lived every day with the scripture guiding his thoughts and forming his actions.  His love for the scripture grew and he became a scholar of the word, preparing Sunday School lessons for the churches he attended across the years including Kinser Chapel, Rogersville, Missouri; Western Oaks in Oklahoma City, Loveland Church of God in Loveland Colorado, Crestview Church of the Nazarene and Second Baptist of Springfield, Missouri. He truly felt that teaching was his calling and he valued and prepared extensively for the opportunities and responsibilities of teaching the word. He read and re-read and prepared and prepared again. As a family we saw what a walk with Jesus Christ looked like. He was showing us the way with acts of kindness, a gentle spirit and a twinkle in those blue eyes that led our family with humor and dignity.

He was an extremely creative and innovative person, spending many retirement days building fine furniture in his barn for his home and for the homes of family and friends. He would take frequent coffee breaks as he felt that no glass of water was complete unless brewed with coffee grounds.  He also enjoyed his time helping to care for the grandkids, great-grandkids and even worked some at Springfield Freightliner where he made yet more friends and did excellent work. He also served as the president of the Purdy Alumni Association where he reconnected with dear friends and made new ones as well. As a member of One Community Church in Rogersville, his legacy continues through a church who serves community and families living here and around the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Erval and Lola Nickle, his in-laws, Reverend Tommy Becker and Jewel Becker, brother, Hubert Nickle, sisters Edith Dodson and Arlene Cole, and sister-in-law Carolyn Becker.

He is survived by his wife of the home, Norma Lee (Becker) Nickle, his daughter Gena Brownwood and husband Mark, his sister Rena Henderson, his brother-in-law, Jim Becker and special friend Jacque Wimmer,  his grandson, Jonathan  Brownwood and wife Stephanie, his granddaughter, Elise Clement and her husband Ross, his granddaughter Katelyn Jones and her husband, Josh;  great-grandsons, Jacob Clement, Grant Clement, Zachary Clement, Knox Jones, great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Brownwood, Emily Clement, Ella Kate Clement, Everly Clement and Norah Jones, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Heaven is sweeter since we know where he is. This isn't a "good bye", but a "see you later" on the other side.
