IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roger
Garner
January 5, 1947 – October 16, 2024
Roger Wayne Garner, born on January 5, 1947, in West Plains, Missouri, passed away on October 16th. He was 77 years old.
Roger dedicated his life to education and mentorship, leaving an indelible mark as a teacher and coach. He was passionate about shaping young minds, and his career in education spanned over several decades. As a coach, he inspired countless athletes to reach their potential, not only on the field but in life. Even after retiring and relocating to Springfield, MO, Roger continued teaching as a substitute for Ozark High School. He quickly became loved by students and teachers. He spent breaks visiting with fellow teachers and coaches. He spoke highly of the Ozark School District and loved the days he spent roaming the hallways.
Beyond his professional life, Roger was a devoted father, husband to Cathy, and a beloved friend to many. He was known for his warm smile, witty Roger-isms, and willingness to help others. He loved golfing with friends, traveling with family and cheering on his grandchildren, Jake, Lainey, Reese, and Cameron. He was so proud of his family and everyone knew it. You could often find him bragging about his sons, Mark and Michael, and telling "stories" to his daughters-in-law, Nicki and Jess. He never tired of talking basketball with his brother Gary (Barbara) and his brother-in-law Jerry Hall. Countless games were rehashed in hotel rooms and over the phone.
Roger always knew his brother-in-law Tom Young (Connie) could answer his lawn care questions. His family and friends remember him as a man of integrity, kindness, and quiet strength.
Roger's legacy is carried on by his children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives he touched through his work and friendship. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and the many students who were fortunate enough to be guided by his wisdom.
Roger's life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19th at 3:00 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, where his life will be honored and cherished. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to Ozark School Athletics (1350 W Bluff Dr, Ozark, MO 65721) or a cause near your heart.
May his memory be a blessing.
