Robert "Neil" Smith, 93, was called home to be with our Lord Saturday, December 15, 2012 following a prolonged illness. Neil was born October 1, 1919 in Ottawa, KS to Philo and Ida May Smith. He served in World War II, a Navy Seaman on the Pacific front, aboard the aircraft carriers the USS Bennington and the new USS York Town as an airplane mechanic. After the war, Neil made his home in Springfield, MO. Here he wed Maizie Belle Williams and raised not only bountiful gardens, but also two children. Neil was a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Hardin class, along with many close friends. Neil loved God and was a humble servant of the Lord. He attended church regularly until his failing health placed him in the loving arms of the many wonderful caregivers at Integrity Home Care and in Manor Care's nursing home in Springfield. Neil is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Maizie, his parents, one sister, Annie May, and five brothers, Keefer, Max, Howard, Philo Jr. and Eugene. He is survived by his daughter Cindi and husband Mark Tedesco, his son King and wife Glenda and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church at 10:45am Wednesday, December 19, 2012 with the funeral service following at 11:30am with the Reverend Greg Ellis officiating. A short graveside service will follow at Maple Park Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
