Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a remarkable father, avid collector, and devoted friend, who lived a life defined by curiosity, craftsmanship, and boundless generosity.

Robert Frederick Rutter was born February 24, 1944, and passed August 16, 2026. He was preceded in death by his father Harold Rutter, mother Mary Rutter, and brother Charles Rutter. Robert is survived by his brother William Rutter, and daughter Renee Wilbur and partner Peggy Barton.

He had a brilliant mind and a sharp intuition, traits that served him well throughout a long and respected career in the insurance industry, where his colleagues deeply admired his business acumen. However, his true passions lived outside the office.

An insatiably curious collector, he was especially drawn to nautical history, Civil War memorabilia, and vintage soda fountain pieces. His creativity and love for nostalgia culminated in a custom-built 1950’s diner right in his Connecticut home—a legendary gathering space where friends, family, and good times were always welcome. His hands were never idle. Whether he was crafting a giant backyard deck, building an epic childhood treehouse complete with a zip line, or pursuing his dream of fine furniture making, he approached every project with remarkable skill.

An adventurer at heart, he inspired a lifelong love of the outdoors in his daughter. From countless summer camping trips at Sebago Lake in Maine and chasing the beauty of upstate New York waterfalls, to an unforgettable month-long cross-country camper journey exploring America’s national parks, he showed those around him the wonder of the natural world.

He was an athlete who loved running, cycling, and skiing, sharing many snowy adventures with family at Otis Ridge. That athletic spirit poured over into his role as a fiercely loyal supporter of his daughter’s athletic journey throughout high school. He never missed a game, cheering faithfully through soccer, basketball, and softball seasons, and sharing time together following the UConn women’s basketball team.

Above all, his greatest legacy was his immense capacity for kindness and civic duty. He believed deeply in helping others, dedicating his time alongside his daughter volunteering at Hartford soup kitchens and pitching in at the local dairy farm.

Smart, adventurous, fiercely supportive, and endlessly resourceful, he leaves behind a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.

As per Robert's wishes, there will be a private graveside service for immediate family. Our family would like to thank all the healthcare workers and support we have received.
