Obituary

Robert "Bob" Nathaniel Willett died on April 25, 2012, his 85th birthday, from pulmonary fibrosis. He was born at home in Charles City, Iowa, April 25, 1927, to Clyde Richard Willett and Emma Martina Hunsted Willett. In 1930 the family moved to San Diego, California. After High School graduation in 1945 he volunteered for the US Navy serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Shangri-La, CV38. As a hobby in the 50's he raced English Sport cars throughout southern California. He graduated from California Polytechnic and San Diego State Universities with degrees in engineering. He met and married Barbara Ann Barnes in 1956. At the time he was working for General Dynamics Convair on design of the F106 aircraft. He was transferred to GD's Atlas engineering program in 1958. From 1960 through 1963 he was assigned to Atlas launch site activation in Nebraska. From late 1963 through 1967 he worked for Grumman Aircraft as Test Site Conductor, on the LEM program. He finished out his aerospace career with Lockheed Aircraft, Burbank, retiring in 1978. The family moved to a hobby farm in Iowa where Bob finished out his working life as Manager, Plant Engineering and Maintenance for the Wellman Dynamics Corp., retiring in 1991. Robert is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara and children, Brian (Lucy), Tamra Willett-Johnson (Rick), Brad (Maryanne), Amy Muller (Dave), and a sister Barbara Ann Fletcher. His life was blessed with nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Lindsey, hospice nurse from Oxford. Special thanks to Mel Hendrickson who visited every Wednesday, rain or shine. As Bob would say, "thank you my friend." A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the First and Calvary Presbyterian Church Tuesday May 1, 2012 at 10am under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Private inurnment will take place at the "Wall of Honor" at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, MO.
