Obituary

Robert Daniel Huitt, of Springfield, age 86, passed away October 30, 2013. Robert (Bob), son of Lawrence and Easter Huitt, was born March 25, 1927 in Palmer, Nebraska. He moved with his parents from Nebraska to Illinois and then to Indiana before settling in Salem, Missouri. He attended Salem High School, graduating in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945. Following a tour of duty through 1946, he attended Drury College in Springfield and graduated in 1950. He married his high school sweetheart Louise Wilson upon her graduation in 1947 in Salem. Upon graduating from Drury College, Bob worked for Swift and Co. in Springfield and Joplin for six years. He then spent 29 years with IBM before retiring in 1985. He was an example to his co-workers, building trust and rapport with his many customers. His success won many IBM Golden Circle awards that enabled him and Louise to travel all over the world. After retiring from IBM, he worked part-time for Kolar Business Systems for several years. Bob was a member of the Springfield JayCees, the Southside Kiwanis Club, Twin Oaks Country Club, the Elks Lodge, and the Shriners. He was a member of Unity Church of Springfield. Bob's sense of humor and humility was only two of his endearing qualities, and why he solidified so many life-long friendships. He was an avid golfer and bowler, baseball fan, and played basketball in high school. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Bob is survived by wife Louise, daughter Cyndi Freeman, daughter Laurie Fisher and her husband Rick Fisher, son Dan Huitt Jr. and his wife Bea Thompson, four grandchildren Luke Fisher and his wife Tracy Fisher, Natalie Freeman, Annie Huitt and Robert Huitt III, as well as great-granddaughter Whitney. He is preceded in death by brother Dick Huitt, sister Patty Barnes, and son-in-law Don Freeman. A memorial service will be held 2:00 on Tuesday, November 5, at Unity Church of Springfield.
