Obituary

Robert Douglas Jones "Doug" was born November 21, 1957, in Joplin, Missouri and passed away on March 29, 2015, at the age of 57. Doug moved to Springfield, Missouri at age 7 and has been a resident ever since. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1975, where he was a stand-out basketball star. He went on to New Mexico State on a full scholarship to play Division I basketball. He transferred from New Mexico State to Drury University where he had the privilege of contributing to Drury's 1979 NAIA National Championship team. Doug was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame as a member of this championship team. Doug obtained master degrees in psychology and education from Drury University. Doug's greatest love, outside of family, was car racing. He attended races all over the country and plenty of local races as well. Most recently, Doug was a teacher at Ozark Technical College. This is the occupation he enjoyed more than any other. While standing at 6 ft. 9 in tall, Doug was a gentle giant. He had a sensitive, artistic side that he expressed through his paintings. He is survived by his daughter, Callie Jones; mother, Carol Jones; brother, Rod (Benton) Jones; former wife, Ellen Lewis; niece, Lindsay (Louis) Trimble; nephews, Ryan, Rudy, Axel and Brody Jones. Visitation will be Friday, April 3, 2015 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, in Springfield, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations in Doug's memory to Ozark Technical College Foundation, 1001 E. Chestnut Expressway, Springfield, MO 65802.
