Robert Gerald Bird, 89 of Springfield passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Cox South Hospital. He was born on May 31, 1923 in South Greenfield, Missouri to Clifford and Berniece Bird. Robert graduated from Lockwood High School in 1941 where he was well known for his athletic accomplishments. After working at AERO Parts Manufacturing Co. in Wichita, Kansas for several years, Bob returned to Springfield to attend and graduated from Draughons Business College. He was employed at Southern Missouri Trust for 30 years. Robert was married to his wife of 68 years, Mary Elizabeth Morris on April 8, 1944 in Lockwood, Missouri and she survives of the home. Being active in many fraternal orders, he became Worshipful Master of Solomon Lodge in 1964, was past presiding officer in the York Rite bodies in Springfield. He served as Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Missouri and was active in many other Masonic bodies. Robert was Past Potentate of the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine. He was Past Patron of Crescent Chapter #21 and served as Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Missouri, OES, in 1974. Robert was also a past WOS of Pleiades Shrine of WSOJ and a Master in the Grand Cross of Color, IORG. Bob was a happy person and loved to tease. He had a natural ability to serve. Robert loved to travel with Mary Beth and had been in every state and several foreign countries. Funeral services will be Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, 1947 E. Seminole with visitation at 1:30 pm preceding the service. Burial will be in the Lockwood Cemetery on Monday, November 26, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1551 E. Portland, Springfield, Missouri 65804 or any Rainbow Assembly of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, or charity of your choice.
