Richard James Reilly, age 88 of Springfield, Missouri, passed away Friday, January 14 at 7:30 p.m. after a two year battle with cancer. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved to Springfield in 1980. He is preceded in death by his daughter Patricia in 2001 and his wife Marcella in 2002. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and after he was discharged he became a New York City mounted policeman. He enjoyed being a cop and he had great stories to tell. Even though he stayed busy with work he always made time to coach youth baseball. After he retired from the police department he became an investigator for Citi Bank. Shortly after arriving to Springfield he was employed as head of security at Drury College. He and Marcella enjoyed spending time bowling in leagues at Sunshine Lanes. He loved his family and he loved his church. He was member of St. Agnes and he served two terms as the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his son, Richard and wife Mary Alice of Brooklyn, N.Y. and another son, Edward of Nixa, MO; grandson Richie Reilly and his wife Dina of Malvern, N.Y.; granddaughter Traci Hutchings and husband Denny of Nixa; grandson Kevin Reilly and wife Denise of San Marcos, CA; and grandson Michael Reilly and wife Susan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Chase and Jesse Hutchins, Allyson and Michael Reilly, Analise and Nicolas Mochwart and Kara and Kevin Jack Reilly. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Zubair and staff, Dr. Milne, Nurse Janie and staff, Father Mike McDevitt, the entire staff at Mercy Villa and Hospice Compassus for their extra special care of their dad. Visitation will be held in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home on East Seminole on Friday, January 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be in St. Agnes Cathedral on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers please send donations to St. Agnes Church.
