Obituary

Richard Knut Lundh, of Manitou Springs, Colorado, and Springfield, Missouri, died peacefully on June 16, 2022. His wife, Martha (Marti) Lundh, was by his side.

Dick was born on January 23, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois to Julia (Jane) and Reidar Lundh. His family moved to Manitou Springs when he was young, where Dick grew up. He went to Manitou Springs Elementary and High Schools before transferring to the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Cañon City, Colorado and graduating. Dick worked at the Pikes Peak Summit House in summers when he was growing up.

Dick is a combat veteran from the Korean War, where he served as a Radar Electronics Technician on the U.S.S. Orleck and the U.S.S. Princeton. After the war, Dick graduated from the University of Colorado, using benefits from the G.I. Bill.

Dick worked in the insurance industry for many years. In that role, he lived in Panama and traveled throughout Central America and the Caribbean. After he retired from the insurance industry, Dick went back to the Pikes Peak Summit House to work for several summers in the 1980s.

After fully retiring, Dick split his time between Springfield and Manitou Springs.

Dick loved Manitou. When the incline was still a railway, he took visitors up it. When the incline became a trail, he watched hikers from his front porch, especially on wintry days, to track their progress. At one time, he served on the board of the Manitou Springs Library. He was a dedicated member of the Manitou Springs Kiwanis club. He especially loved serving runners at the spaghetti dinner before the Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent. Dick didn't throw anything away, and throughout the years, he donated lots of Manitou memorabilia to the Manitou Springs Heritage Center.

In Springfield, Dick was a member of the University Club, volunteered for Friends of the Library, and volunteered at Mercy Hospital for 20 years.

Dick could talk to anyone about anything. He made friends everywhere he went; it was hard to leave a restaurant with Dick because he always struck up a conversation with a server or another patron. Dick's father was from Norway, and Dick loved to talk about all things Norwegian. He also loved to talk about his travels, politics, and just about everything else.

Dick will be missed by his wife, Marti Lundh, and many, many other friends and family who were lucky enough to know and experience his charm, curiosity, and kindness.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held in Manitou Springs in September. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Manitou Springs Kiwanis Club, https://www.manitoukiwanis.org/donate .
