Obituary

Richard D. "Dick" Covey Sr., 89, Springfield, Mo., went to be with his Lord on October 15, 2009. He was born January 23, 1920, in Hartford, Conn. His first wife, Cecelia B. Covey, preceded him in death in 1987. He is survived by second wife, Louise Cass Covey; and sons, Richard Covey Jr. and wife, Connie, and James Covey, both of Springfield, Mo. He has two step-sons, Michael Cass, St. Louis, Mo., and Don Cass, Springfield, Mo.; and two step-daughters, Laura Tennant and husband, Mike, Rogersville, Mo., and Cynthia Keener and husband, Scott, Springfield, Mo. He has one granddaughter, Crystal Covey Weiss and husband, Dave, Escondido, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Dick attended the University of Connecticut, and served in World War II, U.S. Armed Forces in the Pacific, for 22 months. While in the service, he was awarded a commendation for outstanding performance of his duties from April, 1945, to December, 1945. He was assembly manager for Royal Typewriter for 28 years, and worked in three foreign countries while employed with Royal Typewriter, Germany, England and Portugal. He was also personnel and purchasing manager for Foremost Dairies for 17 years. He served on the personnel board for the City of Springfield for six years, delivered Meals on Wheels for 25 years, served with Crosslines, and worked with United Way as executive assistant. Richard was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and actively attended the men's prayer breakfast at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church for 25 years, as well as helping prepare breakfast two months out of the year until his health prevented him doing so. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Services will be held in Wesley United Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at 10 a.m. Private interment will be in Springfield National Cemetery, 1702 Seminole. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. John's Hospice Care, 1570 W. Battlefield, Springfield, MO 65807.
