Obituary

Rex Gerald Pierce, 96, passed away in his home Saturday September 20, 2014. He was born March 25, 1918 in Topeka, Kansas to Myldred and William Pierce. Rex moved to Springfield at 12 years old. Rex graduated from Senior High (now Central High School) in the class of 1936. Rex worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone as a line man, then at City Utilities at the Main Street power house, until he was drafted into the Army in 1943. In the Army, Rex was in the 1264th Combat Engineers. After basic training in Texas, he was then stationed in England and then on to Germany. Rex was proud of his military service and told many stories of his exploits in Germany. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he returned to Springfield and started a long career as a traveling salesman with the Springfield Brake Co. He retired from the Brake Co after 45 years. Rex married Eva Love Abernathy before the war and had 2 children; Rex Gerald Pierce, Jr and Kathleen Marie Murnan. Rex remarried in 1970 to Noi Mae Glynn, who had 2 children; Dr. Paul Glynn and Bob Glynn. They were married for 37 years. Rex was an avid shooter, marksman and fisherman. He was a crack pistol shot and won many tournaments with his wife Noi Mae Pierce as his "spotter". He was famous for tossing a coin in the air and being able to hit heads or tails, whichever one was called. Rex and Noi Mae loved to fish and had a cabin at the lake. Rex was preceded in death by his first wife Eva (Abernathy), by his parents, his 2nd wife Noi Mae (Glynn) and his brother, Clifford. Rex often said that he was "the last of the Mohicans", missing his late wife greatly. Rex is survived by his four children, Rex Gerald Pierce Jr. of Edwardsville, Illinois and Kathleen Marie Murnan of Springfield, Dr. Paul Glynn and wife Karen of Sparta and Bob Glynn and wife Gail of Springfield. He has seven grandchildren, David Murnan and wife Jessica of Macon, GA., Becky Whittaker and husband Bill of Springfield, and Jennifer Dinamarca and husband Claudio of Springfield; Sean Glynn and wife Laura of Springfield, Brian Glynn and wife Mary of Lebanon, Oregon, Heather Barnes and husband Scott of Miller, MO, and Amy Jo Smith and husband LeRoy of Springfield; and 16 great grandchildren; many special friends and family including Mike Murnan, Stan Cary, Harold Merritt, his Thursday night Poker buddies and many others. A special thank you to those that helped care for Rex: Kristy Parker, Carol Fike, Ann Cook and all the other wonderful staff and nurses of Intrepid Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 23, at 2 pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, with Father Miller officiating. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held on Monday from 6-7 pm.
