Raymond Eugene "Gene" Adkins Jr., age 68, of Springfield, MO passed away at 9:35 a.m. on January 2, 2018. Gene graduated from Greenwood high school in 1967 and received degrees from Drury University and Missouri State University with an emphasis in Political Science and History. He worked at Meeks Lumber since the late 1970's and "retired" in 2015. In his youth, he was a longtime member of National Avenue Christian Church and was most recently a member of Nixa Christian Church. Gene was a Civil War and sports enthusiast, and acted as a volunteer soccer coach for many years. He was most passionate about genealogy and he dedicated years of research to the Adkins and Unger family trees.

Gene was preceded in death by father Raymond Eugene Adkins Sr. and mother Dorothy Ruth Adkins (Unger). Gene is survived by his wife, Monica Sara Adkins; sister, Mary Fisher and husband John, niece Rachel Fisher; son Sam Adkins; son Peter Adkins and wife Jenie, granddaughters Ella and Sophia Adkins; step-son Michael Neal and wife Kelli, grandchildren Preston and Raelin Neal.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018 in the funeral home.
