Peggy Sue Gilbert, born January 30, 1946, in Mesa, Arizona, passed away on April 18, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri. A beloved educator, community servant, and tireless advocate, Peggy's legacy is one of compassion, strength, and unwavering dedication.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Lucille Gilbert, and her siblings: Annette Gilbert, Ralph Woodall, Raymond Woodall, Betty Calhoun, and James Gilbert. She is survived by her siblings: Ruth Brantley, Dorothy "Dot" Gilbert, and Henry Gilbert. She will be greatly missed by special friends Maria Vicencio, Diane Clark, Courtney Pham, and Robin Ridenour. Her God Grandson, Chance Pham, will also miss her deeply.
For 44 years, she taught at Missouri State University, inspiring countless students with her unconventional approach to education. Even during her battle with cancer, Peggy never missed a class, proving the profound impact of her teaching.
Beyond the classroom, Peggy's service to her community knew no bounds. She worked passionately to protect the elderly from abuse and bullying. She co-founded the ACE Club to support students in rural Arkansas and was a founding member of the Tereze Harris Scholarship Foundation, which she personally funded for 10 years.
Peggy was awarded the Faculty Excellence in Community Service Award by Missouri State in 2014, a testament to her lifelong commitment to others. She lived by the motto: "Stand for others when they cannot." Her legacy of kindness, courage, and service will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
