John "Oliver" McSweeney, 72 of Springfield, passed away suddenly on Friday, October 7, 2011 at St. John's Regional Health Center. Oliver was the son of John Patrick and Madeline Mary McSweeney. He was born in Mungret County, Limerick, Ireland. He has been married to the love of his life, Kay, for 34 years. Oliver was a graduate of Christian Brothers School, Limerick City, Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1957 where he began his career in the medical field. He became a citizen of the United States in 1980. Oliver was a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and St. John's Regional Health Center School of Radiological Technology. He also attended Southwest Missouri State University. He was the administrative Director at both St. John's Hospital in Springfield, and Skaggs Hospital in Branson, and had accumulated 39 years of service at St. John's Regional Health Center, where he was currently a Clinical Instructor in Radiology. He was Past Exalted Ruler (1989 and 1993) of Springfield Elk's Lodge #409 and has been a member for 29 years. Oliver also served on the Board for the City of Springfield, MO. Oliver is survived by his wife Vanda Kay; two sons, Mark McSweeney of Springfield and Kevin White of Ash Grove; three daughters, Melissa Fleck and husband Shawn of North Dakota; Renee Townsend and husband Jay Brown of Republic, MO; Melanie Hammes and husband Mike of Kansas; two sisters, Alexandra (Lall) McSweeney of Springfield and Priscilla Logsdon and husband Bernie of Brookline; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his beloved dog, Dallas. Oliver was preceded in death by his father, mother, and aunt, Sister Mary Vincentia, R.S.M. and grandson Cory White. Visitation will be Thursday, October 13, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, 1947 E. Seminole, Springfield, MO.
