Obituary

Norman Forest Shryer peacefully departed March 22, 2015. "Norm" was born on December 18, 1921, to Johnnie and Ora (Allen) Shryer near Gerster in St. Clair County MO on the farm owned by his family for over 130 years. He graduated from Weaubleau High School in 1939. After finishing Draughon's Business College in Springfield, he worked several years for MFA, International Harvester Co., Inland Printing Co., and MSU. In 1960 he was employed by the Springfield Public Schools as purchasing agent, retiring from this position in 1986. He was a member of the Solomon Masonic Lodge #271 AF & AM, Springfield Chapter No. 15 R.A.M., St. John's Commandery No. 20, K. T. ZabudCouncil No. 25 R. & S. M. and Abou Ben Adhem Shriners. He sang with the Shrine Chanters under the Direction of Bro. Joe Bailey. In the late 1940's Norm fell in love with the sound of four-part harmony. In 1950 he was instrumental in forming the first Springfield Chapter of the Barbershop Quartet Society. He sang Barbershop Quartet Harmony for 55 years, winning the Central States Contest in 1958 with the Buccaneers quartet. He was a charter member of the Civic-Airs, a vocal and instrumental group under the direction of S. K. Grundy. The group featured well-known local artists. He was baptized in the creek that ran through the family farm at an early age and was a member of Schweitzer Methodist Church in Springfield, MO for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by Billie Janell (Dysart) Shryer, his loving wife of 65 years; his parents; his sister, Gloria Jean Wheeler and her husband, Robert Wheeler. He is survived by one daughter Vickie; three sons, Greg and wife Annette, Eric and wife G-g and Jeff; six grandchildren Janell Teeters, Christian Shryer, Kristin Blankenship, Brad Shryer, Jevin Shryer, Kelsey Shryer; three step-grandchildren Gena, Taylor and Ryan Metzger; and eight great-grandchildren. Norm attributed his long life to faith in God, Love, Laughter, Music and "The Best Wife there ever was." Visitation will be Friday, March 27, 2015 at 10 am in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, with funeral service to follow at 11 am. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63131-3597.
