Obituary

Noreen Cox, our beloved Auntie N., died the morning of April 29, 2015, at the age of 101 in Springfield, Missouri. Born Noreen Elizabeth Fox on March 23, 1914, in Northern Ireland, Noreen's early years were spent on a Cree Reservation in Canada where her father Charles Fox was an Episcopal minister. Her mother, Marjorie, whose British accent and devotion to teatime were eternal, was known as Queenie. The family settled in Springfield where her father was Pastor of Christ Episcopal and Noreen attended Central High School. They later moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Noreen graduated from Fort Worth High School. Noreen's first husband, Jack Collier, was a pharmacist who befriended the wildcat oilman Sid Richardson, who liked working from a booth in the soda shop. With Mr. Richardson's financial investment, Mr. Collier established the successful Jack Collier Drugstore chain in Texas. Noreen was widowed young and later re-met her Springfield high school sweetheart, Warren Cox, who was working in Texas for the Frisco Railroad. She loved recalling the moment she saw him again, after all those years, tall and good-looking in a store-bought silver Stetson. She left her elegant home in Fort Worth to return to the Ozarks with Warren. The couple settled in Springfield to manage the Cox family property and businesses with Warren's brother, Rolland Cox Sr. and his wife Joan Shockley Cox. Later, Noreen and Warren moved to Branson, Missouri, and operated the colorful Long's Wax Museum on the strip, where visitors could appreciate an eclectic collection of life-size wax figures, such as Jesus and his disciples, Charlie Chaplin, and President Jimmy Carter. The couple never had children but Noreen was beloved by her four Cox nieces and nephews, Rebecca, Stormy, Jimmy and Judy, and later, all of their children, who worked summers in the museum in Branson. Petite, pretty and blond, Noreen had an infectious laugh, large, bright blue eyes, a charming and occasionally naughty sense of humor. Her voice had the feisty lilt of a 1930s era screwball comedy heroine and she punctuated tall tales with a sly wink and a squeeze of the hand. She was a great player of cards, had her hair and nails done weekly, without fail, and was devoted to her Schnauzers, Mr. Toby and Queenie. She lost her much-adored husband Warren, who was known as Uncle "Double" in 1998. Her last years were spent at the Rogersville Care Place in Rogersville, Missouri. She was especially close to her great-nephew James Haley Cox, who took her to lunch once a week. She is survived by her nieces Rebecca Lee Saunders of San Francisco and Judith Cox Weston of New York City and, her nephews Rolland Cox (Stormy) and his wife Mary Beth Cox, and James Randall Cox and his wife Krystal McCulloch Cox, of Springfield. Her great nieces and nephews are Rachel and Courtney Saunders, Kelly Cox Turner, Leslie and James Haley Cox, Alexandra and Ben Weston, Thomas Cox and Sam and Sarah Freeman. She leaves behind great-great nieces and nephews Matilde, Elodie, Teddy, Charlotte, Declan and Samuel. A memorial service for Noreen will be held at Maple Park on Friday, May 8, at 3:30 p.m.
