Nancy Ballard Johnson passed away peaceably at her Springfield, MO residence on September 28, 2015, with family at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Simon Johnson; her parents James H. Ballard, Jr. and Genevieve Ratliff Ballard; and her sister, Marilyn Mackay Rabakukk. Nancy is survived by son Fredrick "Rick" Palmer Johnson, and his wife Jan; son James Ballard Johnson, and his wife, Marilyn; grandchildren James B. Johnson, II, and his wife Katie, Edward "Ted" Mackay Johnson, Jennifer J. Fleming, and her husband Court, James Palmer Johnson, and Anna Elizabeth Johnson. Nancy was a 1946 graduate of Springfield Senior High School. She pledged with the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity at Drury College and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in education. She loved history, particularly the history of her family. She was a member of the First Families of St. Louis; the Colonial Dames; the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; the Daughters of the Confederacy, among other organizations. She was also a Kentucky Colonel. Nancy was a public school teacher until her sons were born. Thereafter, she was a loving wife and mother, supporting her husband's career by moving their home as needed. Throughout her life, she maintained friendships with the people she met around the world. She was especially close with her high school "girl friends". Nancy was a faithful member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, MA for more than seventy years. There will be a private graveside service for family and close friends on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 2 pm at Hazelwood Cemetery under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
