Mitchell Lewis Jones, age 98, of Springfield, MO passed away at 5:53am, February 17th, 2022, in his home in Springfield, MO. Mitchell was born on August 7, 1923 in Taylor, MS, the son of Norwood and Corrie Jones. He graduated from Taylor School in 1943 and soon thereafter joined the United States Military, 1st Marine Division, during World War II from 1943-1946. Corporal Jones was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for injuries resulting from enemy actions. Upon returning from war, Mitchell met the love of his life, Helen Dickey from Darling, MS. Mitchell and Helen were married for 72 years and lived in Oxford, MS, Greenville, MS, and Springfield, MO. Mitchell worked for South Central Bell for 44 years until retiring in 1990. He was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church in Springfield, MO.
Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Virginia Jones; sister, Marvel Myers; brother, N.L. Jones; daughter, Gail Weicht (Byron); father, Norwood Jones, and mother, Corrie Jones.
Mitchell is survived by three children, Craig (Toni) Jones, David (Sherry) Jones, Jane (Floyd) Nixon; eight grandchildren, Deanna (Tom) Beckenholdt, Raymond (Ashley) Coleman, Kate Nixon, Sheree (Aaron) Sharpe, Chris (Summer) Bryant; William Lundy, Scott (Jessica) Jones, Lauren (Justin) Mateer; and fifteen great-grandchildren, Haley, Caden, Carson, Hollis, Harrison, Louise, Keaton, Ellie, Spencer, Savannah, Kai, Abigail, Issac, Clara and Lucy.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 22nd at 9:30am in Springfield, MO with Chris Bryant officiating, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be at 9am preceding funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
