Mildred Naomi Smith was born July 25, 1912, in Colbert, Oklahoma to Napoloen and Albertine White, and went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 20, 2009 at the age of 96. She was the oldest of 11 children. She attended school in Oklahoma and later married the love of her life, Vernon Earl Smith in October 1931. To this union, was born 2 sons. They later moved to Springfield, Missouri to continue their cooking and catering skills. They united with Gibson Presbyterian Church and were very active members, serving in many capacities, including ushering, until ill health overtook them. She loved crocheting and all types of sewing, including quilting. After the death of her husband in January 1997, her son Vernon moved her to Los Angeles, where he could look after her. He received many calls inquiring about her health and to tell her how much she was missed. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Ogel Talley; and a brother, Sonny White. She leaves to mourn her home going, a son, Earl Eugene and his wife, Cheryl, Phoenix, Ariz.; 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren; 6 sisters, Mabel Parker, Augusta Hopkins, Cleo Hopkins, Gladean Jordan, Marcella White, Beverly Ann Penn; 2 brothers, Napoleon White, Jr. and Alphonso White; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Together they raised and befriended many others over the years. She will be forever remembered and sadly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 29, 2009, in Gibson Chapel Presbyterian Church under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel.
